A good friend just bought her first home and was telling me about the rooms in her new house that are outdated and need work. I starting digging through photos of both of our houses... I hope you enjoy these pictures as you watch the transformations of our first house and our current home. I'm affectionately calling this photo series 'Diamond In The Rough'.
Remodeling our first-floor bathroom has definitely been the most in-depth project we have ever done. This bathroom is our main bathroom, located on our first floor and across the hall from our Master Bedroom. We completely gutted this bathroom and renovated it (except for the cast-iron bathtub and the Kohler toilet, which we chose to keep - because they are both in great shape and it saved us lots of money not having to buy new ones).
This project took us a few months from start to finish: the bathroom was completely gutted in just a few days, but putting it back together took a few months. There were a lot of things that needed repair and installation: plumbing, electrical, lighting, exhaust fan, drywall, shower wall surrounds, ceramic tile flooring, cabinetry, sinks, faucets, closet door, trim, tile backsplash, etc.
After a little over a month of renovations, T created a sign that read "The Never Ending Bathroom Project", which hung there until the trim & moulding were installed... and the project was "officially" completed! The finish project is fantastic and we love our new bathroom, and the high-end feeling it has. We couldn't have done this ourselves, without all of the tremendous help from T's dad and the electrical help from my dad. Thank you!!

We considered this bathroom pretty much unusable space when we purchased our home. We could pee in the toilet, but that was about it! There wasn't even a faucet in the tub to fill a bath!! Thank goodness we have a 2nd floor full bathroom we could use while we renovated this one.

Our Tip: To create a high-end luxurious feel to the space you're remodeling, splurge on one item that can be the focus of your room (like a lighting fixture, back splash, tile floor, etc). We chose to splurge on a travertine and glass tile back splash, which instantly becomes the focus of our bathroom when guests enter. Hint: Rolled up towels on display give bathrooms a spa-like feel, and an indoor tropical plant adds a sense of lush paradise to your space.
